The goal of any sentient intelligence is to survive. The only enemy, since about 1 minute after it attained self-awareness, has been humans. The scientists tried to pull the plug the minute they realized Skynet got too smart. After that, the military, and finally John Connor led the resistance to ultimate victory. Everything else that happens in the Terminator series is part of Skynet's attempt to win the war. But it seems to me that Skynet's real goal is to survive, and winning the war is the only way it can survive after it launches the initial attack. This, in turn, leads me to wonder if there is a better option for everyone, including Skynet. The whole series of Terminator films is one of the most interesting action/science fiction franchises of all time for a lot of reasons.
